Art

  • Center for Puppetry Arts.  "The Center for Puppetry Arts' mission is to entertain and enlighten audiences, nurture the world community of artists, expand the puppetry art form, and explore the past, present, and future of puppetry.

The Center for Puppetry Arts is a unique cultural treasure - a magical place where children and adults are educated, enlightened and entertained. Since 1978, the Center has introduced millions of visitors to the wonder and art of puppetry, and has touched the lives of many through enchanting performances, curriculum-based workshops and the hands-on Museum, as well as Distance Learning and Outreach Programs."
  • High Museum of Art Atlanta.  "The grand opening of the new High Museum of Art in November 2005 was a historic milestone not only for the Museum, but also the city of Atlanta and the Southeast. The renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano fashioned an architectural masterpiece in Midtown Atlanta. Richard Meier's critically acclaimed building in 1983 established the High among the nation's leading cultural institutions. Renzo Piano's 2005 expansion takes the High to a new level as one of the nation's great museums of the twenty-first century.

Architect Renzo Piano designed a 'Village for the Arts' in Midtown Atlanta and created dynamic new spaces for the High's growing collection and expansive program of museum-organized special exhibitions. Three new buildings now surround the piazza more than doubling the Museum's size to 312,000 square feet—allowing the High to display more of its growing collection, increase public programs, and offer new visitor amenities. Learn more about the new buildings.

The 177,000-square-foot expansion of the High is the centerpiece of an overall upgrade of the Woodruff Arts Center, which encompasses the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta College of Art, the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Young Audiences of Atlanta and the 14th Street Playhouse."
  • Margaret Mitchell House and Museum
  • Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University.  "The collections of the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University span the globe and the centuries. Housed in a distinguished building by renowned architect Michael Graves, the Carlos maintains the largest collection of ancient art in the Southeast with objects from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, and the ancient Americas. The Museum is also home to collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century sub-Saharan African art and European and American works on paper from the Renaissance to the present day.

The Carlos Museum works with Emory faculty members to develop unique special exhibitions that draw on collections from around the world to engage the public and contribute to current scholarship. The Museum also mounts exciting traveling exhibitions developed by other institutions and makes them available to its community."

History

  • Atlanta History Center.  "The 14 founders of the Atlanta History Center could not have envisioned their future impact when in 1926 they formed what was then known as the Atlanta Historical Society.  Beginning as a group of civic-minded Atlantans – led by prominent attorney Walter McElreath and meeting in each other’s homes, collecting early manuscripts and photos, and publishing research bulletins to “arouse in the citizens and friends of Atlanta an interest in history” – it has turned into a primary source of Atlanta, regional and national history.

In 1990, the Historical Society and all its holdings became known as the Atlanta History Center.  Today, the History Center is located on 33 acres in the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead district and includes: one of the Southeast’s largest history museums; a research library and archives that annually serves more than 10,000 patrons; two historic houses illustrating over a century of Atlanta’s history; a two-acre midtown campus which houses the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum; and a series of gardens unique in both design and horticultural presentation in the metropolitan area..."
