Organizations

Charitable

  • Atlanta Community Food Bank.  "Founded in 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank currently distributes almost 2 million pounds of food and other donated grocery items monthly to more than 800 nonprofit partner agencies in 38 counties in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Distributing these donations to low-income Georgians, our partner agencies provide dynamic links between the local community, the Food Bank and our supporters.

In addition to our core business of food distribution, the Food Bank has a number of projects that help build community including Atlanta's Table, Community Garden, Hunger 101, Hunger Walk/Run, Kids In Need, Product Rescue Center and The Atlanta Collaborative Kitchen (TACK)."
  • Atlanta Community ToolBank.  "The efficacy of community-based organizations relies on the availability of several types of resources. Typical resources include funding, volunteers, and competent leadership, among others. One often-overlooked resource is the availability of tools for use in service projects facilitated by the agency to advance the mission. The non-availability of tools is overcome through two typical approaches. First, the agency may ask volunteers to bring their personal tools, placing their volunteers at risk of tool breakage, loss, or even theft. Second, the agency may own an inventory of tools, resulting in maintenance and repair costs, the complexity of secure storage, and inevitable ‘shrinkage’.

The Atlanta Community ToolBank provides a unique and simple solution by making tool lending and all associated functions the sole mission of the agency. An independent steward for a community-wide commodity, the Atlanta Community ToolBank is a vast ‘tool library’ that lends tools and equipment to community-based organizations for use in mission-advancing service projects.  Over 140 distinct tool types are available for borrowing, including power tools, ladders, safety and custodial gear, as well as tools for landscaping, carpentry, masonry, drywall, demolition, and plumbing projects. New types of tools are added periodically, as requested by borrowing agencies..."

Our professional staff combines independent research, practical ideas and tough-minded advocacy to overcome the opposition of powerful special interests and win real results for Georgia's environment. Environment Georgia draws on over a decade of success in tackling our state's top environmental problems."
  • Georgia Conservancy.  "The Georgia Conservancy is a catalyst for the stewardship of our natural environment through education, principled advocacy, and inclusive decision-making in order to make Georgia a premier environmental state."
  • Georgia Forest Watch.  "Our mission is to protect and restore the native ecosystems of Georgia's Mountain and Piedmont public lands, and to inform the citizens of Georgia about the values of these landscapes.
    • To promote and support the protection of the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests, and to add to the land base of these two forests from willing sellers.
    • To promote and support the protection of other public forests within north and central Georgia, and to add to the land base of these forests from willing sellers.
    • To educate the public through teaching, scientific understanding, and citizen participation of the values of Georgia's public forests.
    • To advocate and promote the protection and increase of wilderness areas and other areas of biological, scenic and recreational significance in north and central Georgia.
    • To monitor compliance with all laws, rules, regulations, standards, and guidelines relating to the publicly owned land of north and central Georgia.
    • To promote and support activities within the publicly owned land of north and central Georgia that allow native forest functions to remain unimpeded."

Networking

Outdoor

  • Atlanta Outdoor Club.  "The Atlanta Outdoor Club (AOC) is an outdoor event-oriented social club established in late 2000. Our focus is offering a wide variety of outdoor events to young-hearted, active adults. Whether you are new to the Atlanta area or have lived here your whole life, the AOC is a great way to explore the outdoors of Georgia and the Southeast (and sometimes beyond) with a fun, friendly and active group.

Each month we have regular outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, backpacking, caving, mountain biking, white water rafting, kayaking and canoeing as well as a monthly social event, and "special" outdoor activities such as survival skills classes, hang-gliding, sailing, scuba diving and environmental support projects..."
  • Hotlanta Adventures.  "Hotlanta Adventures is a younger-adult (18yo-40's) volunteer-based club that provides the opportunity to make new acquaintances and build friendships while experiencing the adventures of the great outdoors and other similar shared interest. Our main goals are fun, fitness, and friendships while engaging in adventurous, social, and educational activities that create an appreciation of our surroundings.

Some of our excursions include hiking, camping, urban/mountain biking/cycling, whitewater rafting, caving/spelunking, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, rappelling, rock climbing, cabining, fishing, geocaching, and other outdoor activities.

Other social functions may involve mixers, movie nights, cookouts, dinners, potlucks, pool parties, Braves games, or going to the zoo or the Georgia Aquarium.

We also participate in activities that promote environmental stewardship such as clean up programs for parks, hiking/biking trails, and/or streams/rivers.

Most of our group members are novices to many of our outdoor activities with some being more experienced outdoor enthusiast. We welcome all experience levels who are egger to participate in our fun, fitness, and friendship activities."

Social

  • Southern Center for International Studies (SCIS).  "The mission of the Young Professionals program is to internationalize the thinking of young professionals, balancing a responsibility to be an educational resource, an avenue for career development and a social outlet for globally minded young professionals."

Sports

  • Atlanta Singles Golf Association.  "The Atlanta Singles Golf Association, formed in 1996, is a not-for-profit organization with a current membership of approximately 150 members. The club was founded based upon the principal of getting single men and women together to enjoy their favorite game … the game of golf.

Our Monthly Gathering is held each month at a location in the Atlanta area. At this meeting members and guests have the opportunity to network, socialize, and sign-up for our many social and golf events. Our home page will have the location of our next Monthly Gathering..."
  • Atlanta Ski Club.  "Since its inception in 1964, the Atlanta Ski Club has always been centered around people. As a non-profit organization, the ASC is not about revenue, growth, or profitability. The Atlanta Ski Club has grown to be one of the largest and most successful ski clubs in the world because it is run by our members - the very people who you'll meet at ASC functions. Guests and new members are encouraged to participate in just one event, be it an evening concert at Chastain, or a week-long ski/board trip, and they will uncontrollably discover new friends. Our monthly socials draw hundreds of people, anxious to catch up with the friends they made from past trips. Another pride of the ski club is that most members remain members throughout their lives, often returning even through relocations and the rest of changes life offers. No, you do not have to live in Atlanta to be a member of the Atlanta Ski Club! In fact 20% of our members live outside the state of Georgia, some reaching as far as Europe..."
